One of only ten examples made, this limited edition 1941 Decennium Tourbillon unites a traditional complication with distinctly modern aesthetics. Often a rite of passage for independent watchmakers, this Decennium Tourbillon instead celebrates the work and legacy of the brothers, demonstrating their skill and mastery of the craft.
The tourbillon has long been a rite of passage for many independent watchmakers looking to make a name for themselves. In this case, the visual appeal of the complication, its storied past and the skill needed to assemble one are a fitting tribute to commemorate Grönefeld’s 10th anniversary. Limited to only ten examples, the watch is a rarely seen piece that is a testament to the heights that modern independent watchmaking has achieved.
From a more technical standpoint, the tourbillon is an automatic movement, which ensures that the rate of the movement has less variation, as the watch becomes optimally wound. The movement itself is beautifully finished, featuring over a dozen different finishing techniques, from snailing to frosting. As is customary with Grönefeld’s work, the bridges of the movement are shaped like the bell gable roofs of Dutch houses.
The Decennium Tourbillon is housed within the same case typically used for the Grönefeld 1941 pieces, the name of which commemorates the birth year of the Grönefelds’ father. The dial is a powder blue with darker blue accents around the rim of the dial and complemented by the hands. The tourbillon cage is openworked and clearly visible at 6 o’clock in keeping with tradition, with the words “Decennium Tourbillon” printed just above the complication.
